It is often difficult to answer the question: How do you feel? It is daunting really to pin point exactly what it is that you feel at that moment.
Sometimes is because the feeling is complex, would require an explanation.
Sometimes we are just so not used to talk about our feelings that we are lost for words. Other times we are so scared to reveal what we feel, we get lost in trying to translate our sensations into something acceptable.
The reason good therapists always ask you about how you feel, it is not to torture you in one of the ways described above, but uniquely because emotion matters.
They matters so very much that I dare to say there is no happiness, satisfaction or fulfilment possible without a good relationship with your emotions.
So this is the conundrum: emotions are so important and yet so difficult to express often times. I found a way to help clients to express their emotions that invariably allows clients to identify and share how they feel.
What I do is asking them to choose an image that represent how they feel. I Ask them to show me how they feel.
The images I use are tarot cards, the same Carl Jung was using. Tarot have a mysterious and rich history and really evocative images able to synthetize meanings.
My clients often don’t even know what kind of images they are looking at, it is not important. What is important is that they find every time one or two images that represent how they feel.
Not only that, the chosen image often opens up the possibility to go deeper into that emotion and discover more, heal wounds and start to identify also how you want to feel instead.
If you can to try this at home to see how it work and how it feels when you approach emotions in this way, I invite you to do so. Do you already have a Tarot deck at home? Then you can use that.
If you don’t you can use the images I stored in my website. They are from a deck associated to an Italian book about Tarot for personal development written by Franca Errani : ‘I Venti del Risveglio’.
They are modern and at the same time reflecting all the symbols of the tradition.
